Mrs Dilys Ray (formerly Hughes)

Narberth

After a short illness the death of Dilys Ray, formerly Hughes, occurred at Withybush Hospital on December 11th aged 86.

Dilys was born in Church Street, Narberth on August 16th 1925 and up to her death was one of the oldest true Narberthians. She married David Hughes in 1951 and after his untimely death in 1969, she remarried Douglas Ray in 1983 until she was widowed for the second time when Doug suddenly died in 1986.

Her parents were William John and Mary Irving and she was the youngest of seven children, step sister Lizzie, brothers Dennis and Artie, sisters Dolly, Lorna and Glenys. They were a very close nit family, all had predeceased her. After attending Narberth Church Primary School she then went to Narberth Grammar School.

She worked in the grocery trade at Dragon Stores and Brook House and also in Nobles Newsagents. David and Dilys were popular tenants of the Barley Mow Inn between 1958 and 1965 and also ran a Sunday newspaper business until David’s death. Dilys also worked for many years in Narberth Rugby Club.

She has been involved in several organizations and committees over the years including Mothers Union, Senior Citizens and Queens Hall, always willing to help with cricket teas, attending many coffee mornings and fund raising events.

Dilys was never happier than when at home with her family all around her. She will be remembered as a kind, caring person with a terrific sense of humour, always with a smile on her face.

A large congregation gathered at St Andrews Church, Narberth on December 16th where the service was conducted by Rev Peter Lewis, burial followed at Narberth cemetery.

The principal mourners were Peter and Gary (sons); Nina (daughter-in-law); Ian and Eleri, Marc, Daniel, Ben (grandsons and granddaughter-in-law) and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Unable to attend were great granddaughters Madi and Eva.

The bearers were Ian. Marc, Daniel and Ben (grandsons).

There were family flowers only with donations if so desired towards Arthritis Research and The Stroke Unit at Withybush Hospital being received by Ken Davies and sons, Funeral Directors, Clunderwen, who also carried out the funeral arrangements Philip William Jordan

Pembroke

The death occurred peacefully at Withybush Hospital on November 25th of Philip William Jordan of Bishops Lane, Pembroke after a very short illness. He was 54.

Originally from Jameston he was brought up in Hodgeston. He worked for Shellabear Price before joining Pembrokeshire County Council where he worked as part of the consolidation team on the restoration of Carew Castle. When this was completed he was transferred to Upton Castle as groundsman for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park before joining the South team as a Warden on the Coast Paths. He took great pride in his work and there will always be constant reminders of his work from his stonework to the stiles, walls and bridges that he built.

His main interests were his family and friends. He loved to stop and have a chat with everyone he knew and he liked a good laugh. He always had a smile on his face. In his youth he loved football and played for Manorbier.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Kathryn (wife), Richard (son), Nesta and Reg (mother and father), Irene (aunt), Paul and Karen (uncle and partner), Viv and Gill (uncle and aunt), Kelly, Kayte, Emma and Sophie (cousins), together with numerous other relations.

The large service was held at Lamphey Parish Church before interment at Hodgeston Churchyard and was officiated by Rev Roger Jones with a eulogy by Ian Parkhurst. The bearers were Richard Jordan (son) Paul and Viv John (uncles) and Mervyn John (lifelong friend).

There were immediate family flowers only but donations in lieu for Ward 10 Withybush Hospital may be sent to John Roberts and Son, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock who carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr Leslie Rees Griffiths

Pennar

The death occurred at the home of Mr Leslie Rees Griffiths in Nelson Street, Pennar, Pembroke Dock on December 10th. He was 85.

During his working life her worked for Hadsphaltic builders and then Stanley Jones Builders, and finally as a bricklayer for South Pembrokeshire County Council.

His main interests were his family, gardening, walking and taking photographs of changes to Pembroke Dock.

Les together with his dad and Micky Lee started Pennar Robins Football Club, playing on the Barrack Hill, with the club house being a derelict cottage in Military Road where after matches the players would bath in a large tin bath one by one. He was a very fit man who loved walking and visiting friends who were, unable to get out and about like him.

He attended St Patricks Church, Pennar.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Ken and Joyce Griffiths (brother and sister-in-law); Wendy and Rowland Boyett (niece); Wayne and Cathy Griffiths (nephew); Tiffany Griffiths (great niece); Laura and Colin Trevarthen (great niece); Sarah Ingrey (great niece, unable to attend); Andrew Boyett (great nephew); Christopher Boyett (great nephew); Paul and Liza Griffiths (nephew, unable to attend).

The service was held at St Patricks Church, Pennar followed by internment at Monkton Cemetery and was officiated by the Rev Andrew Davies.

The bearers were Micky Marchant and Graham Padmore (friends), Andrew Boyett and Christopher Boyett (great nephews).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by E C Thomas and son, Pembroke Dock.

Sarah Frances (Ann) Rees

Johnston

The death occurred at the home in Jubilee Cottages, Bulford Road of Sarah Frances (Ann) Rees on November 23rd. She was 72.

The principal mourners were Herbie (husband); Jean and Joan (daughters); Alan (son); Nita and Mary (daughter); Gordon and Shirley (brother and sister-in-law); Eric and Marion (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); June and Joe (sister-in-law and brother-in-law); Melvin and Maureen (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); Robert and Maria (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); Rita (sister-in-law).

The bearers at the service were David and Jamie Davies, Steven and Thomas Rees (grandsons). The officiating minister was Paster Derek Trivette.

Donations in lieu of flowers for Paul Sartori, Macmillan Nurses and Johnston Surgery to be sent to Pam Emry, Johnston Surgery, Johnston.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas, Freystrop MRS MARGARET LESTER

Milford Haven

Mrs Margaret Lester, formerly of Pill Lane, Milford Haven, died at Brooklands Nursing Home, Saundersfoot, on December 22nd, following a brief illness. She was cremated at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on December 30th after a short service attended by family and friends. Mrs Lester, who was 90, was a widow following the death of her husband, Leslie John Lester, in 1992. She is survived by her only son Tim Lester.
