Mrs O I Kavanagh

Lamphey (Formerly of Freshwater East)

The death occurred peacefully at Withybush Hospital on February 25th of Olive Irene Kavanagh, of Park View, Lamphey. She was 77.

A native of Angle, she was the sixth of 12 children born to William and Beatrice Roch, and attended both Angle and the newly opened Coronation School in Pembroke. On completing her education, Olive was employed by the Lowless family of Pwllcrochan, followed by Bowlings of Pembroke, before becoming an auxilliary nurse at Riverside Hospital, caring for a mixture of elderly and maternity patients.

It was during this time that she met her future husband Richard Kavanagh, and the couple married in November 1957. They made their home in Freshwater East and their daughter Veronica was born in 1964.

Richard and Olive were keen gardeners, growing a variety of fruit and vegetables, distributing the surplus to grateful friends and family. Both supported the Welsh Guards, form whom Richard had served during his National Service. The couple also enjoyed a game of darts on the weekend and spending time with their family.

Following Richard’s death in 1977, Olive worked for many years at the Castlegate Hotel, Pembroke, before moving to Lamphey and working at the Dial Inn, retiring in 2008 at the age of 73.

She remained a keen darts player all her life and was an enthusiastic fundraiser for local charities whenever the opportunity arose. A wonderful neighbour, Olive’s door was always open for a cup of tea or a shoulder to cry on. She never forgot her Angle roots and would regularly attend Angle Bingo evenings or join friends and family on holidays organised by her brother, Bobby Roch. In later years Olive took many trips abroad, including two visits to her nephew in Australia. Her greatest joy was spending time with the people she loved.

Olive passed away after a short illness, that she fought bravely and without complaint. She will be sadly missed by all her many family and friends.

The principal mourners are: Veronica and Anthony (daughter and son-in-law); Doris and George, Betty and Bryan, and June and Mike (sisters and brothers-in-law); Vera and Mary (sisters); Iris and Marion (sisters–in-law); Lorna and Maureen (cousins); plus nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to mention.

Unable to attend were Nesta and Bett (sisterrs-in-law).

The funeral took place on March 8thhhh, with a service at Lamphey Church followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, with the Rev G Davies officiating and prayers by Mrs Sally Denman. Jennifer Hughes (niece) delivered a reading, followed by a moving tribute from Rev R Ress. Bearers were Adrian Rowlands; Derek Smith; Clive Rowlands and Darren Shaw (nephews); Brian Smith and Alan Hyde (friends).

Following the funeral, family and friends gathered at Pembroke Rugby Club for a farewell celebration, where Olive was remembered with much love and affection.

There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu of Ward 10, Withybush Hospital being received by John Roberts and Son, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
