Farmers are being urged to fully embrace the new electronic ID (EID) tagging system for sheep.
Following the introduction of EID in sheep born on or after December 31st 2009, J. J. Morris Auctioneers has held a series of practical demonstrations to show the general procedures and potential benefits of the system.
Dyfan Davies, of J. J. Morris, said: “J. J. Morris has invested heavily in scanning and computer equipment, working closely with our IT partners to ensure the system installed in our markets is the most efficient and farmer friendly as possible.”
The demonstrations were well attended, with farming clients from all areas showing great interest in the system.
As auctioneers, J. J. Morris recommends that all sheep farmer clients operate the full EID system.
Mr Davies added: “Although full EID is not compulsory for all sheep at present, embracing the system now will ensure the best prices and widest market is achieved on all sheep presented for sale at any of our markets.”
The general procedure for EID tagging involves ensuring all sheep are tagged correctly before bringing them into the market. Sheep are then sorted, graded, and electronically scanned by market staff before being sold.
Farmers will receive a statement of ear tags as scanned by market staff as part of their market sale statement.
For further information about EID, contact any of J. J. Morris’ market offices: Cardigan on 01239 612343; Crymych on 01239 831845 (market days only) or Whitland on 01994 240665.
