Hundreds of farmers in west Wales will see the price paid for their milk pass the 23p mark this month.
Dairy co-operative First Milk has increased the price paid to members supplying its cheese pool — which includes its 300 farmers in west Wales — by 0.65p per litre, taking its standard litre price to 23.02p.
First Milk chairman Bill Mustoe said: “On the back of strengthening markets, we have secured improved returns from the cheese and whey sectors.”
This is First Milk’s sixth increase in seven months, although not everyone will benefit as the business improves, after it was decided that farmers who have submitted resignation notices will no longer receive price increases.
Mr Mustoe added: “The board has decided that we should recognise the value of members’ committed to the ongoing supply of volume and as a result, future price increases will only apply to members who are not under resignation.”
