88% of Welsh farmers to receive Single Payments on first day

12:30pm Tuesday 29th November 2011

Eighty-eight per cent of Welsh farmers will receive their Single Payments on Thursday, December 1st, the first day that the European Commission allows payments to be made, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and European Programmes Alun Davies announced today.

14,596 applications will have been processed for payment with more than £214m being paid into farmers’ bank accounts, surpassing the achievements of the last couple of years. The Deputy Minister made the announcement at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair at Llanelwedd.

He said: “I am delighted to be able to announce today that 88% of Welsh farmers will receive their Single Payment Scheme payments at the earliest opportunity. It is excellent news for Welsh farmers. This year, I expect over 90% of our farmers to receive their payments by the end of December. “This demonstrates the commitment of the Welsh Government to provide farmers with the best possible service and to ensure that farmers get their Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) direct payments as soon as possible in these difficult economic times. It is thanks to the dedication of staff in Rural Payments Wales that we are able to achieve this.

“These payments show how important CAP is to Welsh Agriculture. This is why I am determined to get the best possible deal for Wales in the CAP negotiations that are currently taking place in the UK and in Europe.”
