Slick and energetic circus

Circus Oz, Wales Millennium Centre until September 7th.
As you might expect, a circus performance at Wales’ iconic Millennium Centre isn’t going to be your usual two clowns and lacklustre knife-thrower under canvas sort of act.
Circus Oz, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, is one of those slick, energetic shows that can only look as if someone’s said:” Let’s do the show right here, right now,” because of the professionalism underpinning it.
There are the usual circus skills aplenty in evidence, jugglers, tightrope walkers, contortionists, a human pyramid, but if you arrive in Cardiff Bay expecting a ringmaster in a top hat and a performing elephant then you’re out of luck.
Using only human performers, and interlacing the acrobatics with a healthy dose of slapstick, music and that particular brand of Australian self-deprecating, physical comedy, Circus Oz has put together a breathtaking spectacle that provides a feast for all the senses.
But be warned, Circus Oz doesn’t do subtlety. Everything is full-on, full-blown, in-your-face entertainment. If lavatory humour or icky chewing gum routines aren’t your thing then the circus skills on display may not be enough to sustain you.
But if you want a bellylaugh, want to ooooh and aaahhh at some truly death-defying feats then it might be time to run away to see the circus.
