Ashman earns the Dragons a point
West Dragons 1-1 Johnston
A GOAL from substitute Jamie Ashman gave West Dragons a good start to life in division one as they battled back to earn a point against Johnston tonight (Tuesday).
The Tigers have been tipped to many to mount a serious title challenge this season, but although Russell Murray’s men would have been disappointed to let their lead slip, few can deny the Dragons were worthy of a draw in this entertaining tussle.
In fact Nigel Delaney’s men blew a great chance to take the lead 19 minutes in when Johnny Horgan was hauled down in the area by Tigers skipper Chris Ormond, but Bradley Barrett fired the resultant penalty over.
And seven minutes later they were made to pay after a run and cross from Johnston winger James Skudder found new signing Nicky Woodrow, who headed home at the second time of asking after his first effort deflected up in the air.
Woodrow went close again before the impressive Skudder saw his angled shot tipped away by Dragons keeper Andrew Mathias.
As half time approached the Tigers appeared in control, but home full back Ian Harries went close when he surged forward and shot past the far post.
After the interval, Johnston midfielder Scott Murray fired just over from long range before Steve Mills nearly doubled the lead as he just failed to pounce on a Simon Ellis backpass.
Tigers winger Tom Wilks dragged a shot wide before Dragons substitute Ashman nearly had an instant impact when he saw his effort well saved by Langdon.
But with 21 minutes left Ashman did level matters, pouncing on a Barrett flick on to score from close range.
The Tigers tried to up the tempo late on as they went in search of a winner but after Woodrow’s shot was well held by Mathias, at the other end Barrett fired just over from long range.
Johnston substitute Ben Skudder nearly got on the end of a deflected cross but it was the home side who had a chance to win it at the death when Horgan’s left footed shot went straight at Langdon.
That proved the last action of the game as both sides had to settle for a point.
