AMATEUR boxing is set to return to Mathry following a lapse of 30 years.

Some of Pembrokeshire’s finest young boxers will be appearing at Mathry Village Hall on Saturday, November 30, in a show organised by Cardigan ABC.

And there is bound to be strong vocal support for Mathry schoolboy Tom Morris, a Welsh schoolboy finalist, who will be looking to capitalise on a rare opportunity to box in front of his home supporters.

An eagerly-anticipated senior flyweight contest sees Begelly’s Ben Baker seek revenge over Aberystwyth’s Welsh champion Jamie Beasley who beat him in last year’s Welsh Amateur Boxing Association championships.

Baker’s younger brother Sam also faces a national champion in Swansea light-welter Ben Crocker (Premier ABC), while Welsh schoolboy champion Peter Price (Begelly) and Welsh Novice title-holders Emyr Simmons and Josh Lloyd-Roby are also included on the 12-bout bill.

“It’s been so long since Mathry had a boxing show that this has created a lot of interest,” said Cardigan ABC coach Phill Morris, of Mathry, who never had the chance to box in his home village.

“It should be a great night and we have no doubt that the local community will rally around and support boxing’s return to Mathry.”
