MERLINS Bridge ABC women’s boxing sensation Charlene Jones has won bronze in the 60kg category representing Wales in Finland.

Wales entered the annual Tammer Taurnus in Tampere, Finland alongside another 12 countries including England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Chinese Taipei and Finland.

The talented orthodox boxer lost her first fight on points against Finland’s Myra Pothonen, the following day she won on points against the Chinese champion Wei-Hsien Lee and then she faced England’s Sandy Ryan on the third day, narrowly losing on points, but had done enough to be awarded bronze at this prestigious international event.

Her coach Graham Brockway was full praise for his protégé. “I’m over the moon with this result,” he said. “This competition is the perfect preparation for next year’s European and Commonwealth Games. If see continues to work hard then she can achieve her dreams.”

The 22-year-old’s Wales team-mate Linsey Holdaway claimed gold, fighting in the 48kg category.

Charlene will now focus on retaining the Welsh title in February next year and her coach Brockway is confident she will gain selection for the Wales team that will take part in next year’s Commonwealth Games that takes place in Scotland.
