Haverfordwest Ladies 32

Abergavenny Ladies 5

AFTER an earlier 17-5 success against Lampeter Ladies, Haverfordwest Ladies played really well as two tries from Clodagh Llewellin helped them overcome the challenge of their counterparts from Abergavenny in their second game in this season’s cup competition.

The sodden conditions dictated play despite both teams trying to play some running rugby. A sticky pitch and a greasy ball were always going to dominate this clash, making it a forward-orientated game.

From the whistle Haverfordwest looked sharp, using their pace out wide with Jasmine Joyce heavily involved in gaining ground.

A tapped penalty from scrum half Lucy Peach found the ever-alert Clodagh Llewhellin, who opened Haverfordwest’s account by powering over for a try.

Abergavenny’s strength and determination shone through in denying the home side any serious momentum but hard work from the Haverfordwest front five of Helen Wilcox, Kate Beaumont, Joanne Hammond, Natalie Lingwood and Helen Humphries enabled Jess Page and Jo Price to add to the Haverfordwest try tally. This made the Haverfordwest lead look comfortable as the first half closed.

The second half started more defensively for Haverfordwest as Abergavenny sought to attack and after several charges the visitors finally managed to cross the white wash.

But the home side were not long in responding as Nina Colville (captain) sliced through the centre to give the scoring pass to Clodagh Llewhellin for her second try.

Another try soon followed from Charlotte Morgan with the excellent support play of Zoe Daye and Krystal Goodridge.

To Abergavenny’s credit they kept plugging away and tackled ferociously but Jo Price rounded off a deserved victory by scoring in the corner, and with the conversion to her name the game ended with a 32-5 win for Haverfordwest Ladies.

It was a morale-boosting win for Haverfordwest Ladies, who will build on this momentum for their next match away to Abergele.
