Goodwick United 0

Monkton Swifts 1

BEN Adams first half strike earned Monkton Swifts a surprise victory over Goodwick United to reach the last four of the Senior Cup.

The visitors had already lost twice and drawn one before these two sides met in the cup at Phoenix Park. Steve Blackford’s ‘Goodwick Lads’ beat The Swifts at home in the West Wales Intermediate Cup and also won and drawn in their league encounters.

The defining goal was scored in the 30th minute. A floated free-kick in the box caused mayhem and it was Adams who reacted quickest to drill home from close range.

There were very few scoring opportunities throughout the cup-tie as both side’s defences stayed strong and the midfield battle cancelled each other out.

With the home side’s last throw of the dice, Swifts keeper Lance Creese pulled off a stunning save to deny Kieran O’Brien scoring with a direct free kick from the edge of the 18-yard area.

The Swifts were delighted to reach the semi-finals and the last time they won the cup was back in 2007 when they beat Herbrandston 2-1 in extra time when striker Stephen Davies grabbed a timely winner.
