Cambrian & Clydach 1

Haverfordwest County 2

THE rejuvenated Bluebirds side bounced back to the top of the table with a splendid win which produced finely-worked goals by Steffan Williams and Richie Lewis.

The Blues took a little while to adjust to the high bounce on Cambrian’s all-weather pitch but soon found themselves causing problems with the Route One ball. Craig Morris can kick a very good length and with other defenders also employing the ball behind the central defenders, the visitors began to threaten, with Sean Pemberton and Chris O’Sullivan controlling the midfield.

The first goal came in the 21st minute when Williams took advantage of such a ball to get behind the defence and shoot past the keeper from 18 yards. Another Williams run threatened five minutes later but he couldn’t quite square the ball to an unmarked Luke Borelli.

The second goal was extremely well-worked, as Chris O’Sullivan’s short free kick reached Lewis, who curled a beautiful drive from the corner of the penalty area to the top far corner.

Although a Cambrian comeback would have been expected as the second half got under way, it was never just a case of the Bluebirds’ staving them off. In fact the visitors had plenty of the second half possession and play. There were strong Cambrian attacks but Dale Griffiths and Sam Rodon were superb at the heart of the Blues defence and Antonio Facciuto did a fine job of closing down a dangerous Cambrian right-winger. Sub Jack Britton produced a fine 20-miunte performance in midfield, while another sub Joe Leahy chased through on to another long ball to get in a header which grazed the post.

The one Cambrian goal, when it came, did not arrive until the 4th minute of injury time, when a melee in the Bluebirds area saw Morris block three shots before ex-Bluebird Terry Evans was able to stab the ball in from six yards. There was just time to re-start before the Blues could celebrate a fine away win.

The next game sees the Bluebirds play Goytre at the Conygar Bridge Meadow on Friday evening, with a 7.30pm kick-off.
