Welsh League, Division One

Haverfordwest County 1

Penybont 1

THE Bluebirds’ push for promotion finally petered out in a scrappy game in which neither side showed the form which had taken them to the First Division’s top four, writes Robert Nisbet.

They took the lead in the 28th minute when a ball wasn’t fully cleared and Nathan Renfree pounced to drive in from 20 yards.

The early stages of the second half suggested the Blues might get back into contention although there were few real threats. Then came a real blow, in the 71st minute, when the visitors were awarded a free kick out near the halfway line and Walters’ long-range ball wriggled out of the grasp of keeper Kerry Nicholas and crept over the line for a second goal.

The Blues responded once, when O’Sullivan‘s low corner caught the Penybont defence off guard and sub Ben Steele was able to pressurize a defender into deflecting the ball into his own goal.

The Blues’ final game comes next Saturday when they travel to play Aberbargoed Buds.
