WITH only one Welsh Point to Point left, the 2014 season seems to have been and gone before it’s even begun, and the curtain falls at Trecoed this Bank Holiday Sunday, with first race off at 2pm, writes Maria Evans.

Over the last few weeks trainers have felt that their horses are at their best, having been able to give them a couple of runs. This means that connections must travel afield to get to the weekends meetings, and last weekend many a West Walian horse made it’s way East, with the Gelligaer Hunt hosting their annual meeting on Saturday.

In the opening race on that card, Gallaflynn was a convincing winner of the Hunt Race, with Haverfordwest based trainer Mathew Barber also doing the steering for owner John Miles. That was the horse’ second win of the season after disappointing on his seasonal reappearance, and he’ll now be looking to repeat his late season treble of last year.

Barber then went on to finish second in the Men’s Open behind the enigmatic Findlay’s Find, who seems to have really gelled with new partner Dave Mansell. Midnight Diamond was a 20 length second, managing to pip the prolific Rosie’s Peacock in the final few strides.

Colley Row came out the easy winner in the Restricted Race under James Tudor, for owner Chris Williams. Trainer Dean Coleman, who himself rode point to pointing before riding under rules for Tim Vaughan, has now switched disciplines, and trains a handful of horses in Pembrokeshire.

Although coming away empty handed this weekend, jockey Sean Bowen still leads the Male Novice Riders title race for the whole of the UK, with nine wins – three more than his rivals. That title race will go until the end of the season, which ends on June 14 at Umberleigh.
