THE name Bowen has long been synonymous with local and national horse racing success.

However, lately it’s not just been the highly regarded horse trainers Peter and Karen who have been hitting the headlines - but their 17-year-old son Sean as well.

The youngster enjoyed a dream Coral Welsh National day at Chepstow on December 27, securing his first ever treble with wins on Awaywiththegreys (8/1), Quincy de Pictons (20/1) and Ghost River (4/1).

He followed this up with a double at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day - as after winning the BetBright On Mobile Handicap Steeple Chase on Mon Parrain, he rode 25/1 outshot Rolling Maul to victory in the BetBright Casino Handicap Hurdle.

And he wasn’t done there, as on January 2, he was able to celebrate another double, as Kozmina Bay (11/2) and 3 Hollies Pearl (4/6) gave him wins at the meeting at Ffos Las.

His performances have caught the attention of the racing world, and almost certainly secured him a first ever ride in the Grand National at Aintree this April.

He is expected to ride Mon Parrain at the prestigious meeting on Saturday, April 11.

The former Puncheston CP and Fishguard Secondary School pupil is currently based at Paul Nicholls yard in Ditcheat, Somerset, and is coached by the highly renowned Irish national hunt jockey, Mick Fitzgerald.

But he still works very closely with his parents, and father Peter told Telegraph Sport he was delighted with the way his son had progressed after becoming the national Novice Point to Point champion last year.

“We are over the moon that he secured his first treble and then backed that up at Cheltenham and Ffos Las,” said Peter, whose yard is based in Yet-Y-Rhug, Little Newcastle.

“Sean is a very laid back character but he’s obviously delighted with the way things have gone lately.

“He’s a conditional rider and one of his next targets is to win the Conditional Jockeys Championship.”

Fitzgerald himself, who famously rode Rough Quest to a Grand National win in 1996, also reserved praise for Sean: “He is a very promising rider indeed,” he said.

“He’s just like a sponge, absorbing everything you tell him.”

The rider himself thanked everyone for their recent messages of support, and on his official Twitter page said it had been a “brilliant” feeling to have secured a treble on Welsh National day.

He has now ridden in 147 races during this racing season, and has amassed 25 wins, 29 second places, and 25 third places - at a win ratio of 17.01%.
