MacWhirter Welsh Youth League Cup

Round Two

Haverfordwest County 1

Bridgend Street 0

A STUNNING last-gasp winner by substitute Lloyd Hughes earned Haverfordwest County a hard fought under-19 cup victory over Bridgend Street.

Hughes came off the bench to score a superb winner in the 87th minute, Laurie Haworth set-up the goal-scoring chance, the left-sided midfielder danced past Street defenders before squaring the ball to Hughes, who struck a rocket of a shot into the roof of the net to break the visitors’ hearts.

This fixture had been postponed at least three times before the cup-tie was reversed to the Conygar Bridge Meadow, the Cardiff based team were a decent outfit and were strong at the back superbly led by skipper and centre back Jacob Rees.

Bluebirds strikers Aidan Rainbow and Sean O’Neil had no joy in front of goal in the first period, Dafydd Bowen headed over the bar from a corner, but both keepers, Street’s Cieran Lewis and Bluebirds’ Dan Evans didn't have a lot of action to deal with.

Mark Davies and skipper Joey Brill impressed in the middle of the park for the hosts. Left back Joseph Williams looked assured in defence alongside Fraser James, Dan Harding, Joseph Williams and Fraser James.

The tie looked to be heading into extra-time before Hughes struck an absolute beauty to win the clash and send his team into a mouth-watering quarter final tie at Cambrian & Clydach.

Bluebirds youth manager Steve Batty said: “I’m delighted for the boys that we won it, as they were a decent outfit.”
