FAW Trophy – Round 5

Hakin United 3

Garw 0

HAKIN United convincingly defeated Garw to reach the FAW Trophy quarter finals for the first time in the club’s history.

Gary Dawes’ Vikings were too strong in every department for the visitors from the Bridgend area, who play in the South Wales Senior League Division Two.

The Vikings started this cup clash in positive fashion as Dawes played a 3-4-3 formation that worked a treat. Matthew Broome, Gareth Fawcett and Nathan Banner were rock solid in defence, while Steve Mathias, Ashley Bevan, Jonty Bennett and James Stanmore controlled the midfield area.

The three-pronged attack consisted of Adam Davies, Nicky Woodrow and Justin Harding, and they were constant thorns in the visitors’ defence.

Woodrow, Bevan and Harding had early scoring opportunities cleared off the line, but finally the Vikings got the breakthrough in the 25th minute when Adam Davies got on the end of Woodrow’s cross and struck an unstoppable shot in to the top corner.

Nine minutes from full-time and Harding finished from 15-yards that doubled the Vikings’ lead; frustration got the better of the visitors when they were reduced to ten-men.

The hosts took advantage as Harding scored his second of the game and put his side three-goals ahead in this cracking cup-tie at The Obs.

The quarter final of the FAW Trophy was drawn on Monday afternoon, Hakin United have a tasty home draw against Holywell Town, and the tie is scheduled for Saturday, February 21.

The team from Flintshire, north Wales are currently top and unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance Football League Division One. The Wellmen beat Conwy United 3-2 to lift the FAW Trophy back in 2011, the final was played at Belle Vue, Rhyl.
