THE summer edition of ‘Man up in the mud’ proved a resounding success on Saturday as the event attracted a wide range of competitors.

More than 100 runners took to the start line at Pwllcaerog Farm, Celtic Camping, for the 4.6 mile race that is traditionally organised by Fintan Godkin and Carwyn Richards of Man-up UK.

As usual, those involved had to endure their fair share of obstacles, with ice cold lakes, muddy trenches, numerous stinging nettles, hay bails and skips filled with dirt amongst the hazards involved.

The race also incorporated land on Trecenny and Caerhys Organic Farms, and was held alongside the Really Wild Food Festival - which meant after Celtic Camping owner Ian Griffiths got things going with a 'shotgun' start, a large and enthusiastic crowd cheered the runners around the course.

Local athlete Ben Phillips was the first runner home - but the day was about far more than the results, with some choosing to tackle the course in groups or fancy dress, and doing so with smiles on their faces despite reaching the finish line caked in mud.

And they did at least have the consolation of a hot tub to warm up in after finishing.

Afterwards, both Carwyn and Fintan again thanked the landowners for their continued support, as well as Ian Griffiths of Celtic Camping, and those who took part or helped marshal on the day.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the proposed Ysgol Dewi Sant sports tour.
