Joe Lennon Memorial Cup semi final:

Hakin United 15-1 Hubberston

HAKIN strikers Nicky Woodrow and Ben Steele struck 12 goals between them as the Vikings showed no mercy on Division Three side Hubberston at The Obs tonight.

Woodrow struck seven times, and new signing Steele bagged five, as Gary Dawes’ men strolled into a fifth successive Joe Lennon Memorial Cup final.

The reigning Division One champions showed their intent from the first whistle as midfielder Ben Aldred had an early strike ruled out for offside, before Steele had a shot tipped over by Hubberston keeper Luke Coe.

The latter then denied Aldred before Woodrow opened the scoring seven minutes in, tapping home at the back post.

The striker then turned provider, teeing up Steele to make it 2-0 before Woodrow scored a spectacular third, controlling the ball on his chest before curling home a shot from 25 yards.

And sure enough, within 20 minutes he had completed a hat-trick, pouncing on the rebound after Ashley Bevan’s header was parried by Coe.

The pressure continued as Steele shot wastefully wide from close range, before a rare Hubberston attack saw Hakin keeper James Manson come sharply off his line to deny Stuart Slater.

Aldred made it 5-0 when he rounded the busy Coe and curled in an angled shot, before Woodrow unselfishly set up his Steele for his second.

The former Pennar man then completed a treble of his own with a composed finish from inside the area – and Steve Mathias continued the rout with a precise low shot into the bottom corner.

There were then ironic cheers as last season’s Division One top scorer miscued from close range after good work from Mathias – but there was still time for a ninth Hakin goal before the break when Steele’s flick on found Bevan, who smashed a close range shot high into the net.

And there was no let up after the break, as Woodrow wrong footed Coe with a left footed shot – before Hubberston finally had something to cheer when Jamie Butland got in behind the home defence and finished well past Manson.

Woodrow scored his fifth of the evening as he got on the end of a cross from substitute James Stanmore, and Steele added his fourth after he was taken down in the area by Coe, and duly picked himself up to put away the penalty.

Hakin continued to push for more goals and Woodrow somehow blasted over with the goal gaping, before Steele skipped past three tackles and drilled home his side’s 13th goal.

New Hakin centre back Daniel Armstrong then appeared to plant home a header, but it was later confirmed to be Woodrow who got the last touch - and Hubberston’s difficult night was compounded by Hakin’s 15th, and Woodrow’s seventh, as he turned sharply and struck a left foot shot into the far corner.

It completed a rampant display from the cup holders, who now await the winners of Monday’s clash between rivals Milford United and Milford Athletic at The Obs in next Friday’s final.
