Airbus UK 2

Haverfordwest County 1

THE Bluebirds had the disappointment, for the third time this season, of going 2-nil down by half-time, mounting a resolute fight-back in the second half, but finishing the game one goal short.

Wayne Jones had made three changes, with Spencer Williams replacing the injured Ryan Batley at left back, with Jordan Follows coming into the attack, Declan Carroll returning in midfield, and with Steffan Williams and John Roberts moving to the bench. The Blues looked positive from the start but were given an oblique confidence boost in the 8th minute when Kieran Howard played a good ball over the top to Jordan Follows who was pulled back by defender Jordan Barrow, who picked up a straight red card for his trouble.

This setback didn’t seem to trouble Airbus too much during the first half and, although the red-clad Blues did some neat attacking and Luke Borrelli had gone close a couple of times it was the home side who blasted ahead with a two-goal salvo in the 30th and 35th minutes, through their influential left-sided player Tony Gray and Matt McGinn.

If anything the Blues were even more persistent in the second half although the Wingmakers were always dangerous and Scott James was called on to make one superb save from Ryan Fraughan. Howard was the Bluebirds’ main influence and kept pressure on the home side until a dramatic moment in the 75th minute when the Wingmakers’ Ryan Wade got his second yellow card and they were down to nine men.

From that point on Airbus were really battered and had to keep everyone back to repel the red-shirt tide. But there was just the one goal to show for it, one of the now traditional Bluebirds’ central-defender goals, when Sam Rodon went up for a corner. The ball was initially cleared but was played back to him on the edge of the area and he drove in a low shot.

Obviously this result is a big disappointment but at least the Blues have shown this week that they can take on sides from the top four places and have them hanging on desperately by the end of tough games.

The Blues were due last night (Tuesday) to play at home to Aberystwyth Town in the Word Cup and on Saturday, 3rd October, they are at home to Carmarthen Town. This will be the evening game on S4C and kicks off at 5.15.
