Rose and Willow Golf Society Tournament

THE Rose and Willow Golf Society held their second tournament of the year at Milford Haven Golf club last Friday.

The tournament was organised by Owain Picton and sponsored by the landlady and landlord of the pub, Mandy and Lea with prizes from Claire of Coors Brewery along with Mark Molyneux; Paul Campodonic; Owain Picton and not forgetting Tom and Helen of The Glen Hotel, Haverfordwest who donated a prize of a meal for two at their hotel. This was the 20th tournament held by the Rose & Willow with the first one being held in 2005.

There was a lower than usual turnout of 20 members and guests of the society who all enjoyed an excellent day out both on the course and back at the Rose & Willow pub; Neyland.

With the course in excellent condition with the greens a little bit slower than usual because of the autumn work having been carried out on them; as stated by one of the societies golfer the greens was the same for all the players some adapted to them better than others. The greens did not seem to affect the winners score of 45 points by Alex Codd (highest ever score in the Rose and Willow golf days) Alex is a new member of the society and who have recently joined the Milford Haven Golf Club; you might be hearing a lot more about Alex even though he played off a handicap of 28 he was told that when he defends his title next year he will be off 22 perhaps by then he will have a much lower club handicap which he will have to play off.

The two nearest the pins prizes on the 6th hole was won by Bob Williams; 16th hole was won by Owain Picton with the longest drive on the 18th hole won by Andy Price. It was noted that both Bob and Owain missed their putts for twos.

The presentation was held back at the Rose and Willow, with Owain announcing the winners, he thanked Mandy and Lea for their sponsorship before asking Mandy the landlady of the Rose and Willow to present the prizes. The winner’s main prizes were once again provided by Mandy & Lea, with other prizes being given by Tom and Helen of The Glen Hotel, Haverfordwest; Claire of Coors brewery; Mark Molyneux; Paul Campodonic and Owain Picton.

There was an excellent prize table with the top eight of the society having excellent prizes.

After the presentation a meal of curry and rice was provided and washed down by a lot of excellent beer.

Brian Millward Trophy was the 18 hole event on Saturday morning, and Alex Starling continued his good form to win with 36 points.

In the afternoon a friendly practise was played on the mini course under the guidance of Elliot Harding, to prepare this very young group for the upcoming competition on November 1 (Presentation Day). A 'dry run' of that event will be held on October 24, starting at 2pm - all welcome.

On the 6 hole golf course, Sammie Vaughan-Harries achieved a personal best in winning the competition with a score of 41, and a handicap reduction of three shots down to 51 - well done Sammie! There were excellent efforts by everyone on the day, including some young children trying the 6 hole event for the first. Another PB was achieved by Maisie Lloyd, and everything is shaping towards a cracking contest in this event also to be held on November 1.
