BRUCE Tasker has set his sights on a medal in next year’s World Bobsleigh Championships after being named in both the Team GB two and four man squads for the forthcoming season.

Former Greenhill School pupil Tasker, who participated in his first Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014, will act as a driver in the two man team, and as a brakeman in the four man.

He is currently part of the accelerated driver programme that will hopefully see him able to fulfil the role in British colours full time.

As a result, Tasker is expected to begin the campaign as a driver in the Europa Cup series, that begins in Winterberg, Germany, on November 27th.

The 28-year-old will then hope to a brakeman in the GB team that competes in the World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria, in February.

Speaking to Telegraph Sport from Bath on Monday, where the team have been training and undergoing testing, Tasker said he was approaching the winter with much excitement.

“Testing has been going well and we’ve been happy with how things are going,” said Tasker.

“Unlike other sports, ours has the advantage of a World Championships every season so there is always something to strive for.

“We now have extra funding available from UK Sport following our performances in Sochi, which makes this season even more exciting.”

And Tasker, who admits he is still learning as a driver after making the positional transition after Sochi, outlined his intentions to come away from Austria in February with a first World Championship medal to his name.

“I’m enjoying the transition and as a team, we are looking at every avenue ahead of Austria,” he said.

“We’ve finished fifth in each of our last three major Championships and it’s all about those small percentages and improvements.

“We have real depth in our squad now and fantastic athletic ability. We’ll be pushing hard.”

He added he felt the team’s speed at the start would be critical in Innsbruck.

“The track itself is actually simple and easy to drive. So it will come down to whoever starts the fastest.

“Once you get going there aren’t many places that you can make a real mistake – so to win you have to be right up there from the beginning.”
