Haverfordwest Ladies 0 - 32 Whitland Ladies

HAVERFORDWEST Ladies played their eagerly awaited round one Super Cup fixture against Premiership outfit Whitland Ladies under lights on Friday night.

This was the first time the teams had met and the game certainly lived up to expectations with a large crowd enjoying a great advert for women’s rugby.

Haverfordwest, currently playing in the WRU division two, elected to play with the strong wind in the first half and put Whitland under pressure from the start, however they were unable to convert two penalties and paid the price with three well taken counter attack tries from Jennie Collins, Sara M Davies and Angharad Williams, which left the half time score at 15-0 to the visitors.

The second half was as physical as the first with no quarter given by the two teams, but again Whitland took their opportunities with tries from Caryl Griffiths, Natasha Roberts and Emma Summons, one of which was converted by Delyth Davies.

Haverfordwest coach Gareth Charles said after the game: “Credit to Whitland which are a seasoned experienced premiership side who took their chances and were a little more street wise at the breakdown and in attack than us. As a relatively new team I thought we were fantastic, our commitment and defence was inspirational.”

Gareth added: “Our priority this year is promotion and this game will only make us a better side. I wish Whitland all the best in the cup and look forward to playing them on a regular basis in a few years’ time.”
