SPORTS degree students from Pembrokeshire College, were delighted to win the Student Contribution to School Sport category at the Sport Pembrokeshire 2015 Awards ceremony held at Folly Farm recently.

First year degree students; Callum Mcgartland, Craig Butland and Theo Salam have been recognised for there support with schools mentoring and coaching pupils aged between 14-16. Students engaged pupils from Tasker Milward, Pembroke School and primary schools including, Haverfordwest VC. Pupils participated in various sporting activities ranging from football, cricket, badminton, even body-popping!!

“Gaining real mentoring and coaching experience has given me great pleasure, it is rewarding doing something that you genuinely love and seeing how much the pupils are getting out of it,” said Callum.

"The College and the Pembrokeshire County Council’s Sports Development Department work closely together so that students work alongside their officers to develop their coaching experiences in schools and events. Congratulations from the team," Suzanne Thomas, Programme Leader.

“Being recognised for our volunteering in a sports capacity was great, we were a little shocked actually!” said Craig.

Gaining work experience as a coach is part of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, foundation degree programme. The two-year programme allows students to gain credits appropriate to the needs of a variety of settings. The qualification equips the students with the knowledge and skills required for success in the future or current employment in sports coaching / development or related industries. “Winning this award is great for my CV, after graduating I hope to become a Sports Development Officer,” said Theo.
