The Pembrokeshire League made a superb start to the SB Williams inter-league competition as they travelled to Llanelli to take on their counterparts from Carmarthenshire and dished out a 7-1 thrashing as the result of an excellent all-round performance.

It was fitting reward for the commitment of the county’s squad, who had already trained together under assistant coaches Steve Briers and Ian Baker, whilst coach Gary Dawes had only arrived back in London that morning from a three week stay in New York and shrugged off jet-lag to urge his team on.

It might seem strange that skipper Peter Blain was nominated as man of the match by a number of pundits but the West Dragons’ keeper made two vital saves in the opening four minutes from Rob Jones and Stuart Rees before the back four of Matthew Broome, Chris Ormond, Nathan Banner and Steve Allen settled in to a routine.

Blain also made a couple of other saves in that first half but it wasn’t all one way traffic as Nicky Woodrow could consider himself unlucky to have a headed goal from an Ashley Bevan cross disallowed for off-side.

A dynamic run from deep by Bevan also saw Rhys Dalling flash a low shot just wide of the far post but it was Dalling who gave Pembrokeshire a 1-0 interval lead after a Steve Allen through ball allowed Woodrow to set his strike partner on a run with Dalling beating home keeper Darren Greene at the second attempt.

Carmarthenshire again started the second half in positive mood but Blain denied Matthew Williams before Dalling missed a chance of adding his second.

But a superb volley from Johnny Horgan from a Woodrow cross flew in to the net before Blain was again the hero as he saved from a Rob Jones shot, pushed away a Louis Jackson free kick and was perfectly placed to prevent sharp sub Adam Jones finding the net.

Pembrokeshire came back into the game with a third goal as sub Chris O’Sullivan and Woodrow played in Dalling, who was hauled down by Ashley Thomas and referee Dave Morgan showed a red card to the defender before Steve Allen sent Greene the wrong way with a perfectly placed spot-kick.

The home side responded almost immediately as a run from Adam Jones allowed his namesake Rob to bury a show shot from close range but manager Dawes gave a run out to subs Daniel Bryce, Matthew Price and Sean Seymour-Davies as  Carmarthenshire side lost its shape.
They were punished by four more goals, the first a dreadful error by keeper Greene which allowed Woodrow to fire home, followed by a delightful chip to give Horgan his second goal.

Ben Steele also got in the act as reward for his midfield industry and Woodrow rounded off the goal-fest with his second strike.

It nicely rounded off a great evening for delighted manager Dawes and his squad, who looked smart in their bright orange kit sponsored by Manderwood’s – and played just as smartly to earn this cracking victory!
