FORMER Wales and British Lions rugby international Lee Byrne was on hand to put people through their paces at a Boot Camp Wales event in St Davids this month.

Organised by Man-up UK, the day-long event formed part of the introduction to the company’s latest four week boot camp.

From around 8am on Sunday, April 24, the group began with an hour long fitness session at St Davids RFC, led by Fintan Godkin, before Byrne arrived to lead the group on a coastal run around Whitesands - the same route used for the popular annual Whitesands Challenge Triathlon.

The 35-year-old, who now works as a diet and fitness specialist, then led some impromptu games of touch rugby on the beach, before giving a talk on nutrition back at the Sound Cafe, St Davids. The group then finished back at the rugby club with some further fitness work.

“It was really good to have him here,” said Fintan, of Man-up UK.

“He was very helpful and modest. He stayed two hours after he was due to leave to teach some of the youngsters, who joined in for part of the day, how to kick a rugby ball properly.”

Byrne himself, who won 46 caps for Wales and represented the Scarlets, Ospreys, Dragons and Clermont Auvergne, told Telegraph Sport: “It was the first time I’ve visited St Davids and I was blown away with the beauty of the landscape.

“The bootcamps were expertly run by Man-up UK. What I liked about it was that it was hard work combined with fun activities - which balanced the day out really well.”
