Division One:

Merlins Bridge 4-2 Hakin United

The Division One title race took another dramatic turn tonight as Merlins Bridge produced arguably their best display of the season to see off Hakin United at The Racecourse.

The Wizards twice led through Nathan Thomas and Jordan Raymond, but were pegged back on both occasions through goals from Nicky Woodrow and Ashley Bevan - before sub Andrew John struck again for the home side and Lee Hudgell sealed matters late on with a sublime free kick.

Meanwhile just a mile down the road, Goodwick United completed a 3-0 win at West Dragons, meaning The Phoenix Boys now top the table by a point and will need just a draw against The Vikings in Friday's huge title decider at The Obs.

The Wizards have endured a difficult second half of the season, but threatened early on tonight as striker Steve McNabney had a close range shot blocked by Hakin keeper Steve Hartley.

At the other end, Ashley Bevan's low cross was met by Ben Steele, whose goal-bound effort was well blocked by Bridge centre back Chris Ormond.

But 12 minutes in, it was player-manager Thomas who opened the scoring for Bridge, making no mistake with his diving header after Raymond and chipped in a cross from the right.

The home side then missed a great chance to double the lead when Raymond was unable to connect with Hudgell's cross with the goal at his mercy.

And on 24 minutes The Vikings were level after Ormond brought down Ricky Diamond on the edge of the area, and Ben Steele's low free kick was turned in by Woodrow.

Ormond then gave away another free kick in a dangerous area and Bevan, looking to catch out home keeper Josh Hicks, took it quickly but fired inches wide.

The end-to-end action continued and on 33 minutes, Bridge led again when Raymond latched onto a long ball, and kept his composure to slot past an onrushing Hartley with the outside of his foot.

Hakin tried to respond before the break as Banner volleyed straight at Hicks and in injury time, Woodrow and Adam Davies teed up Steele - whose low shot was beaten away at his near post by Hicks.

After news filtered through to Gary Dawes' side that Goodwick were leading, The Vikings upped the intensity after the break and after Woodrow's angled shot crashed off the top of the bar - they levelled on 48 minutes when Bevan's 20 yard effort deflected off Dai Davies and into the net.

Hakin continued to press and Steele blazed a free kick over, before Woodrow had a long range shot tipped away by an outstretched Hicks.

Bevan then flashed a shot inches wide of the top corner and Woodrow set up Steele - whose 15 yard half volley cannoned over via the bar.

But just as Bridge seemed to be hanging on, they stunned the champions with a third on 73 minutes, as Hudgell fed McNabney, who in turn played in substitute Andrew John, and he whipped a curling shot into the bottom corner.

Seconds later Bridge missed a chance to seal it when McNabney was foiled again by Hartley - but then Hudgell effectively ended the contest with a brilliant left footed free kick that found the top corner.

Hakin tried to respond again as Ormond, who had been booked for a first half foul on Bevan, picked up a second yellow card from referee Alan Boswell for a trip on Woodrow.

But after Davies headed a late effort onto the woodwork - the 10 men of Bridge hung on for a win that changes the outlook of Hakin's game with Goodwick on Friday.
