Broad Haven 3

Clarbeston Road 2nds 1

Broad Haven overcame Clarbeston Road Seconds at Marble Hall to win the Third Division Cup for the first time in the club’s short history.

Goals by Dean Jones, Archie Thomas and Spencer Le Petit earned Broad Haven a sweet cup success, making up for the huge disappointment when they narrowly lost 3-2 against West Dragons in the 2011 final.

Broad Haven came into this clash as slight favourites as they finished fifth in the table while Clarbie Road 2nds finished in ninth.

Both teams last met in the league at the end of April and on that occasion Broad Haven won 4-2 at home.

The Haven broke the deadlock in the 30th minute, Clarbie failed to clear the danger inside their own box and Dean Jones reacted quickest to find the back of the net from six yards out. That’s how it stood at half time with The Haven holding onto a slender one-goal cushion at the break.

Clarbie created a few goal scoring opportunities in the first period, but they failed to work Haven goalkeeper John Jones.

Shortly after the break and The Haven doubled the lead, striker Archie Thomas finishing sharply from just inside the 18 yard box.

That goal gave Broad Haven a bit of breathing space, in the 85th minute they added a third goal, Spencer Le Petit beating the offside trap and running clear before drilling a low shot in the bottom corner.

Then just before the final whistle Clarbie bagged a consolation goal, a corner wasn’t cleared inside the box and defender Matthew Davies turned quickly and his deflected shot looped over Jones to complete the scoring.

After the game Pembrokeshire League Council Chairperson Rowenna Lloyd presented the medals to both teams then handed the Third Division Cup to delighted Broad Haven captain Peter Thomas.
