Lawrenny 2nds 3

Monkton Swifts 2nds 1

Lawrenny 2nds claimed the Fifth Division silverware after overcoming Monkton Swifts 2nds at Marble Hall.

In a highly entertaining game it was Lawrenny who got an early breakthrough as striker Kye Bradbury struck a volley home from inside the box.

Lawrenny doubled the lead on the 18 minute mark, an excellent corner fell to James Phillips who powerfully headed past Swifts’ goalkeeper Scott Trayhearn.

The Swifts then had the better of the first period, but failed to score thanks to some heroic goalkeeping by Lawrenny’s goalkeeper Boaventura Mesquita, who was man of the match, pulling off a string of brilliant saves to deny the Swifts.

Mesquita tipped a long-range shot from Cory Mair over the crossbar, Liam Butland rattled the bar from 12 yards, and Mark Parsons’s bullet header at a corner also crashed off the bar, Liam Butland headed a Jadey Hearn floated free kick in the box inches wide of the target.

Remarkably the score stayed 2-0 to Lawrenny at half time with everything to play for in the second period.

In the second period both sides created scoring chances without success, the best fell to Lawrenny’s Joe Kidney who lobbed Trayhearn from the edge of the 18 yard box, but agonisingly went wide.

However, the Swifts got back in the clash with a stunning goal scored by Conner Roberts, the midfielder broke free on the left and unleashed an unstoppable 20-yard shot that flew in the top corner.

Five minutes later Lawrenny added a crucial third, Rhys Jenkins sliding home a cross from six yards that sealed their cup fate.

Just before the final whistle the Swifts were reduced to ten men when Jadey Hearn was given his marching orders after picking up his second yellow card on the night.
