Women's WRU Division 2:

Ynysybwl 16-21 Haverfordwest

HAVERFORDWEST Ladies travelled to Ynysybwl on Sunday knowing victory would secure promotion to Division One - and they achieved just that after a tense affair.

The Blues were looking for redemption against their league rivals after losing at home by a single point a fortnight ago - and they got off to a flying start when inspirational captain Nina Colville handed off several defenders to score.

Stand-in fly half Sophie Rees added the extra points.

Ynysybwl responded with two well-struck penalties and a converted try after a series of powerful pick and drives.

The home pack were also dominant in the scrum, but as the tight contest comtinued in the second half, Haverfordwest kept fighting with Lyn Egelstaff and Sophie Rees touching down.

Rees, usually a scrum half, added both conversions.

Ynysybwl kept in touch with another penalty and threw everything they had at Haverfordwest in the dying minutes, and were inches away from the try line on several occasions - but Haverfordwest defended bravely and held out.

After the final whistle, Haverfordwest coach Gareth Charles said: “Ynysybwl were unbeaten all season and were a tough nut to crack with their uncompromising forward pack.

“But from 1-15 today we were outstanding.

“The players and us coaches were all understandably delighted at the final whistle and we look forward to Division One rugby next season.”
