Both the Carmarthen Warriors and Flamingoes Ladies enjoyed a successful day in Swansea last Saturday at the Beach Rugby Wales event.

It was the Warriors first visit to a tournament dominated by their female colleagues in recent years.

Both teams boasted a number of experienced winners in their ranks, with the Warriors squad at an average age of 37 - and including a Welsh Touch Rugby International.

As expected, they sailed through their group, beating both Swansea Gladiators and Wattstown Young Guns comfortably.

Another victory against Porth matched the Warriors with a young Ponty Butchers side in the Cup semi final.

Meanwhile on the Ladies pitch, the Flamingoes had stumbled within the group stages with a defeat to Pencoed Phoenix. Taking their foot of the gas they let Rhian Noakes, an ex-Flamingo, in to score the winner and the loss put them into the Plate semi final against Barry Bombettes

But both Carmarthen sides began to fire in the semi finals.

The Warriors were up first, their experience proving too much for the Butchers. Similarly the Flamingoes were gaining momentum and put the well-organised Bombettes out of the tournament.

Two cracking finals followed, the Flamingoes taking on Treorchy Ladies who were undone by the pace of Katie Thicker combined with skipper Natalie Walsh, Nina Colville and the self proclaimed 'Queen of Beach Rugby', Keeley Evans, also standing out.

The Warriors had a more difficult test against reigning champions Y Baabariaid.

In possibly the tightest game of the tournament, the Warriors were scuppered when a mix up involving a Baabariaid substitution deprived the Carmarthenshire side of a possible match-winning try.

Both sides and their management felt it had been a productive day

"We’ve kept the Flamingoes name on a trophy," said Walsh afterwards.

"And the Warriors weren’t far away from taking home the Cup too."

For Walsh and Thicker it was a busy day, as the pair doubled up to help out the St Davids Fisheries side who reached the semi final of the corporate competition.

Next up for the Flamingoes is the Man-up UK 7s tournament in St Davids on August 20th, whilst the Warriors will head to Cwmtawe on August 13th.

All the Warriors teams remain committed to their fundraising for Parkinson’s UK this season with the overally total just shy of £3000 at the moment. With further plans scheduled including a dinner in November, they hope to treble that amount before the end of the year.
