Jasmine Joyce was on the scoresheet but missed out on a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics as Team GB were beaten by Canada in the Deodoro Stadium.

Simon Middleton's side saw their Gold medal hopes ended by New Zealand earlier this evening, and were unable to recover against the Canadians as despite tries from Danielle Waterman and Joyce herself,  they went down 33-10.

But for Jasmine, 20, it has still been a fairytale three days, which saw the former Ysgol Dewi Sant pupil score with her first touch of the tournament against Brazil on Friday, and she featured in every Team GB game as a second half replacement.

And Jasmine, who represented both St Davids and Haverfordwest RFC as a youngster as well as the Pontyclun Falcons, Cardiff Met, and the Scarlets, has been the subject of much media attention in Brazil as the only non-English player in the Team GB squad.

But she has won widespread praise for her demeanour and attitude, and become renowned amongst the press for her constant smiling and willingness to talk openly.

She has been supported throughout in Rio by parents Jason and Bethan, and grandfather Ted, but has also expressed her delight at being bombarded with messages of support from back home.

And she will forever be etched in the history books as the first Welsh rugby player to represent Team GB at an Olympic Games.

The Women's 7s side will now remain in Rio to support the men's side, who kick off their campaign tomorrow, before returning back to the UK later in the week.

The Western Telegraph would like to congratulate Jasmine on her historic achievement, with far more reaction from friends and family to come online and in this week's paper.
