THERE will be no Red Bull Cliff Diving at the Blue Lagoon, Abereiddy, today after the second scheduled day of the World Series event was cancelled with strong winds forecast.

Instead, the full competition was completed yesterday, with Michal Navratil (Czech Republic) and Rhiannan Iffland (Australia) the winners of the men's and women's competitions respectively.

The schedule did appear to have been altered early on Saturday when the practice dives and then opening rounds of the competition were seemingly brought forward without warning - with a brief break in the action as two Red Bull stunt aeroplanes entertained the capacity crowd.

Rumours then began to circulate on social media that organisers had chosen to cancel Sunday's action and sure enough, at around 1.35pm, an announcement was made on the tannoy and the following statement was released.

"The 6th round of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series planned for Sunday 11th September will be condensed into one day of competition instead of the scheduled two days, due to the wind conditions that are forecast for the Blue Lagoon, Pembrokeshire, on Sunday.

"Gusts of 33pmh (53kph) are predicted on Sunday afternoon, which makes it unsafe for the divers to compete from the 27.5m men's platform and the 20m women's platform. An earlier start on Sunday is not possible due to the tides in the lagoon."

As a result, the full four rounds of the male competition and three rounds of the female competition were held on Saturday  - with organisers adding full refunds will be issued to Sunday ticket holders.

It meant those who had Saturday tickets enjoyed the bonus of a full day's action, but many who bought Sunday tickets only have been left angry at the lateness of the decision, given the high winds for day two had been forecast throughout the week.
