HAVERFORDWEST’S Jason Davies stormed home to win the final races of the season at a rain soaked Pembrey last Sunday to clinch the 2016 Welsh Sports and Saloon Championship.

It was an emotional time for the family team, as it was virtually 21 years to the day that his dad Martin Davies won the last of his three Welsh titles.

Any thoughts Jason had of strolling to the title went out of the window as torrential rain showers swept the track. Indeed, he later revealed: “We decided early that the best place to be was in the lead,” and he set out his stall in qualifying when he was almost two seconds faster than everybody else to take pole.

He then drove away from the field to win by almost 30 seconds in Race 1 and by an even bigger margin in the final race of the season.

“I was really pushing it, this Championship is not easy, there are a lot of very good drivers in it and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t involved in any battles today,” he said afterwards.

“We had some problems early in the season but we worked on them and the car is now quick and reliable.”

Dad Martin added: “I’m glad it’s over, it was really tense.

“I’d rather be driving than in the pits as part of the crew.”

Jason has also confirmed that he will be re-entering in 2017 in a bid to defend his title, but before that, will pick up the Overall Trophy at the awards night at the end of November. He will and will also pick up the award for most race wins, having won six of the ten this year.

Mathry’s Ken James will also bring some silverware home to Pembrokeshire, having clinched third in his class this season.
