Friendly rugby:

Tenby United XV 19-26 Llangwm

A crisp evening at Heywood Lane was complimented by a competitive and exciting game under lights as Llangwm edged out a Tenby United XV in a match that yielded seven tries.

From kick off The Wasps took the game to The Seasiders, but despite dominating the early possession, could not find a way through the resolute home defence.

And Tenby then behan to assert themselves in attack and led when No 8 Charlie Patching showed a great turn of speed on the half way line, and sidestepped through several tackles for a superb try that Tom Baker converted.

This stirred Llangwm into a response and after good carries from man of the match Paul Jonker, Ieuan Power and Aled Morgan, veteran No 8 Ian Griffiths hurdled a defender for a try under the posts that Steve Picton converted to make it 7-7.

From kick off Llangwm ran the ball back at The Seasiders and both Yale Grice and Rhys Baker made inroads before Power was hauled down just short of the line - but Rhys Mason was on hand to set up Jonker, who cut a good angle and duly crossed to make it 7-12.

But in the closing moments of the half The Wasps were dealt two blows when Baker and Power were yellow carded - although given it was a friendly fixture, the referee allowed the latter back on the field to scrummage as Llangwm had already used their replacement front rowers.

And the home side took full advantage when winger Jordan Asparassa crossed in the corner to level the scores at the interval.

There was no quarter given by either team early in the second half, and Tenby were next to strike when centre Baker took a quick tap penalty and scampered between the posts before adding the extras himself to put his side 19-12 ahead.

But again The Wasps hit back as Matthew Lewis and, playing on permit from Haverfordwest, replacement back rower Dave McCallum and hooker Gethin Thomas set up the platform from which Mason bundled his way over in the corner. Picton then brilliantly converted from the touch line to tie the scores again.

The game then ebbed and flowed with both teams looking for the decisive score, and it was The Wasps who go it after good work up front by James Griffiths, Josh and Mark Hicks, and Jason Mock - before the ball went wide to Lewis Jones and Louis Murphy, who gave the scoring pass to Jonker. Picton converted to make it 19-26.

Tenby then mounted some sustained pressure, but with Spencer Rouke, Dave Reynolds, James Lewis, Tom Meehan and Daniel Morgan amongst those tackling thier hearts for Llangwm they were unable to get the crucial try - but both sides deserve credit for producing an entertaining 80 minutes of rugby.
