Nigel Delaney has stepped down as manager of Goodwick United and the club has published an official statement on Facebook to confirm his exit from Phoenix Park this week.

The timing of Delaney’s decision maybe far from perfect, but following holders Goodwick United’s shock 2-1 exit against Clarbeston Road from the Senior Cup on Wednesday, and less than 48 hours later Delaney had decided to resign.

Delaney first cut his teeth as a manager with West Dragons, he led them to promotion from Division Two in his first season in charge, and the following season he led them to their first Senior Cup final appearance.

Delaney then took over the reins at Goodwick United, and in his first season in charge they won the Senior Cup, then last season he led them alongside assistant Chris O’Sullivan to the Pembrokeshire League Division One title, Senior Cup and capped off a record winning season by claiming the West Wales Intermediate Cup at the Liberty Stadium.

Delaney said: “I think that I’ve made the right decision, it’s in the best interests of Goodwick United, it’s time for someone else to take the club forward and whoever it will be I wish them every success.”

Asked whether he would consider being manager of another club in the future?

“I would never rule that out. If the right club asked and I felt it was right, then obviously I would relish another challenge.

“For now I’m going to support my sons, Matty and Scott every week, and take a back step from all the responsibility which comes with being a manager.”

Goodwick United FC released a statement on Facebook.

“It is with regret that we announce that Nigel Delaney has stepped down as manager of our First Team with immediate effect.

“His spell in charge has been one of tremendous success, culminating in the team winning the treble last season.

“We are extremely grateful for all the hard work that Nigel has put into managing the team. He has also been a hard working committee member doing a lot of tasks to help the day to day running of the Club.

“We are delighted that he will be remaining on the committee.

“Wayne O'Sullivan will be in charge of the team for the game at Pennar Robins. A further announcement will be made in due course.”
