IT was a record breaking day for James Tomlinson when the Pembrokeshire Harrier represented the GB Junior Athletics team at a meeting in Loughborough on the weekend.

The GB team competed against a Loughborough University side, as well as representative teams from England, Wales, and Scotland.

And in the under 18s 1.5kg discus event James, who lives in Pembroke Dock, threw 63.48 metres to not only win the competition, but set a new Under 18 British record in the process.

The 17-year-old, coached by Cardiff based Paul Jensen, said he was delighted with how things had fallen into place.

“It’s hard to put into words,” he told Telegraph Sport.

“It’s been a long road with hard gym sessions and an exhausting training schedule.

"Sometimes I’ve thrown a discus up to 50 times in a session.

“I’ve also had to come through some injuries and it’s just such a positive feeling - and what’s more it does my coach and family proud.”

However, there is certainly more to come from James this athletics season, as he has been selected for Wales at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas this coming July.

As well as training with his coach and the Harriers, James undertakes sessions at the Strength Academy Wales gym in Sir Thomas Picton School.
