Ormond Plate Final:

Haverfordwest (119 for 4) lost to Hook/Llangwm (120 for 1) by 9 wickets

AN excellent innings of 58 not out by George James guided the combined teams of Hook and Llangwm to a comfortable victory over their counterparts from Haverfordwest in an absorbing Ormond Youth Plate Final which as usual was superbly hosted by Lawrenny Cricket Club.

James was joined by Aled Phelps (10) and skipper Noah Davies (25 not out) in taking just 16 overs to reach their target, assisted by 27 extras, 23 of them wides as The Town youngsters felt the pressure of trying to keep James and Davies quiet.

Another batsman to show his class was Haverfordwest captain Nikhil Mathias, who opened their innings and stroked 11 boundaries in his score of 66 before he was well caught by Aled Phelps of Noah Davies’ pace bowling.

Jack Scriven gave valuable support with his 24 (two fours) in a big opening stand of 87 before Seth Willington, one of five 12 year olds in the combined side, came on to bowl and had Scriven fall earlier to a brilliant one-handed catch by Davies.

Haverfordwest continued to press as Lewis Rhead added 14 runs, including two boundaries, but went for one big hit too many and was neatly stumped by Tom Carrington to give Davies his second scalp.

Johnny White was adjudged lbw to Callum Jenkins for a duck and at this point their innings stalled against excellent bowling from Davies, Phelps and Jenkins so that they could only manage ten runs in their last five overs.

That, and the conceding of so many wides, was to prove vital because it took the pressure of the Hook/Llangwm openers James and Phelps, who had two boundaries to his credit when he was bowled by Mathias for 10.

It was to be their only success with the ball, however, as skipper Davies batted sensibly for his 25 not out (two fours) and James looked in control with a cracking undefeated 53 that contained five fours and a six.

It was quality stuff and earned James the man of the match award, which was presented by Phil Lloyd, on behalf of the family of the late David Lloyd, who sponsor the trophy, at the post-match presentations led by Paul Webb, the chairman of Pembroke County Cricket Club.

It was a quality performance from Hook/Llangwm which earned them the plate, also sponsored by the Lloyd family, and both teams deserve credit for the way they played in front of a good crowd on a lovely Lawrenny evening!
