Welsh Veterans Football League (Over 40s):

Hakin United Over 40s 4-3 Trefelin BCG Over 40s

If anyone at The Obs was expecting a low key kick-about between former players this afternoon - then they were treated to anything but as a late own goal sealed a thrilling win for Hakin United over Trefelin BGC in an intense clash that yielded seven goals.

The Vikings took control at the break after two goals from Paul Jones, and one from strike partner Matthew Price, put them 3-1 ahead as Craig Latham struck for Trefelin.

But the Port Talbot-based side, despite missing their star attraction in Lee Trundle, fought back to level after the break as Steve Boydell and then Kevin Bartley both finished clinically.

But with time running out, a Leighton Edwards cross was diverted into his own net by Leighton Connors, giving Hakin a perfect six points from their first two games of the campaign.

The home side started with the strike duo of Jones and Price, both still scoring regularly in the Pembrokeshire Football League, and the pair ensured their side led eight minutes in.

After Price was brought down in the area by Trefelin defender Paul Wiseman, referee Bernie Armstrong pointed to the spot and Jones buried the penalty into the bottom corner.

Despite missing Trundle, the visitors still boasted former Swansea City players Kristian O' Leary and Jonathan Coates in their starting XI, although the latter almost put his side two down when he headed a Leighton Edwards cross towards his own net - but keeper Gareth Scantlebury reacted well to tip the ball away.

And then on 24 minutes Trefelin levelled, as substitute Craig Latham met a long ball into the area with a glancing header into the net from ten yards out.

But within two minutes, Hakin were back ahead and again it was their front pairing who combined, as Price floated in a left foot cross that Jones headed in at the back post.

Price then nearly struck himself as he dragged a left foot shot inches wide after being played in by Richard Nash - but six minutes before the break, the Camrose man had his goal after playing a one-two with Gary Dawes and drilling an angled effort home.

Trefelin's Neil Davies did then have a low free kick that home keeper Jason Rickard pushed away to safety - as Malcolm Jones' side led 3-1 at half time.

The opening 40 minutes (time per half at veterans level) had seen some hefty challenges from both sides, and the intensity continued early in the second, with referee Armstrong doing well to keep control of things as tempers frequently boiled over.

Bartley did shoot just wide of the top corner from 20 yards for Trefelin, and at the other end, Edwards had a diving header saved by Scantlebury after a lovely floated cross from Shaun Mills.

But with 15 minutes left, the visitors set up a tense finish when Boydell curled in a superb effort from the edge of the area to make it 3-2.

And five minutes later, the sides were level when Bartley found space in the area, and turned well before drilling a low right foot shot past Rickard.

In a frantic finish, both sides then pressed for a winner and Price returned to the field to hammer another angled shot narrowly over.

But Trefelin also went close when Coates rolled back the years with a mazy run into the area, only to see his close range shot blocked by a combination of Adam Collins and a sliding Nigel Delaney.

But then with three minutes left, came the decisive moment, as Edwards pounced on a poor clearance from Scantlebury, and surged down the right hand side of the area before seeing his low cross turned into his own net by Connors.

There was still time for Boydell to volley wide from 25 yards for Trefelin, and Jones missed a chance for a hat trick for Hakin when he headed an Edwards cross into the side netting - but it mattered little as the home side held on.
