Division Two West:

St Clears 3-17 Whitland

There was a war of attrition in the Division Two West derby battle at St Clears, as two tries from scrum half Adam Davies helped Whitland to a 17-3 win.

After a tough opening half the visitors led 7-3 at half time, then scored 10 points without reply in the second period to go second in the table.

The match was only cleared to go ahead after a late pitch inspection from the referee, and it was the Carmarthenshire Saints who had first use of the wind, but some early pressure came to nothing as The Borderers held firm in defence.

And it was the away side who then took control as after winger Sean Coles had a try disallowed, No 9 Davies sniped over for a score than half back partner Nico Setaro converted.

But the latter was also off target with a couple of penalty attempts, and opposite number James Davies kept the home side in it at the break when he landed three points.

As the pitch cut up, the third quarter produced few chances but with 20 minutes left, Whitland grabbed the killer score when their pack pushed forward from a scrum in the St Clears 22, and Davies used the platform to dart past two defenders en route to the line.

Setaro converted from out wide, and then moments later kicked a penalty in front of the posts to make it 17-3.

To the credit of Mike Jones' side, they rallied late on and pushed for the seven points that would have given them a bonus point, but a series of forward drives were repelled and it was Whitland who made the short journey home with a vital victory.
