Division Three West A:

Pembroke Dock Harlequins 17

St Davids 10

It was a true mudbath at Bierspool as Pembroke Dock Harlequins edged past St Davids - but only after the Saints had fought back from 17-0 to set up a tense finish.

Ossie Boswell's side were seemingly cruising early on, after a well executed lineout drive from 15 metres out saw second row Phillip Young touch down for a try.

The Quins continued to press as the strong running of centres Mathew Lewis and Harry Owen got them on the front foot - although ti was from a loose kick in midfield they got their second try, as winger Liam Hargrave-gibson gathered on the left touchline and outstripped the cover defence to score.

Full back Lewis Davies converted well in the swirling wind.

A third Quins try came in fortuitous fashion after lively scrum half Ollie Lewis fed prop Rob Hearne from a close range penalty, but after he lost possession near the line, second row Dai Rees pounced to score with The Saints' claims of a knock on ignored by the referee.

But then the visitors got a foothold, and hooker Adam Williams impressed with his workrate whilst No 10 Scott James began to turn the home side with his kicking.

Quins flanker Hywel Baker was yellow carded for dissent, and then on the half hour mark, the St Davids pack won a scrum against the head in the home side's 22, and No 8 Anthony Davies and scrum half Fraser Watson combined to out James over in the corner.

Just before the break The Saints opted to go for a scrum from a penalty five metres out instead of an easy three points, but a blindside move came to nothing as The Quins stood firm to lead 17-5 at the break.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half were understandably scrappy as the Bierspool surface began to deteriorate, with the game 'stop-start' due to a large number of re-set scrums.

But with 15 minutes left it was The Saints who set up a tense finish when a cross kick by centre Dafydd Williams set up a close range chance for prop Dan Murphy, who duly charged over from close range.

That cut the deficit to seven points and Matthew Williams’ men then pushed hard for a third try, and James went close again when he narrowly failed to gather an inside pass from winger Mark Wilson.

Full back Gavin Smith also cut into The Quins 22 in the final play, but the home side dealt with the pressure that followed before No 10 Aaron Cookson was able to clear the touch - as Boswell's young side celebrated a hard fought win.

The Saints meanwhile, could at least reflect on another improved display as they notched a deserved losing bonus point.
