FAW Trophy Round 5:
Goodwick United 1
Penydarren BGC 1

(After extra-time - Penydarren win 4-3 on penalties)

GOODWICK United bowed out of FAW Trophy after conceding a last-gasp extra-time equaliser against Penydarren - and then cruelly lost 4-3 on penalties at Phoenix Park.

In a goalless 90 minutes played in torrential rain, home keeper james Gwilt was outstanding with a string of saves.

And then just three minutes into extra time, the deadlock was finally broken when the Phoenix Boys were awarded a penalty after Lee Hudgell was brought down inside the box - and skipper Adam Raymond took responsibility and coolly despatched from 12 yards.

However, the South Wales Alliance Premier Division team dramatically equalised in the 120th minute when Goodwick failed to clear their lines, and Connor Kinsey drilled home left footed from close range to force the tie into penalties.

Gwilt pulled off one penalty stop, but Chris O’Sullivan and Kieran O’Brien both saw their efforts saved, and the hosts prevailed 4-3 on penalties to progress into the quarter finals.

Shortly after the cup tie skipper Raymond said: “An outstanding effort from everybody involved in today’s performance. A heroic, proud effort against probably the best side to play at Phoenix Park for many years.

“James Gwilt, yet again, produced one of those special performances that will live in the memory for a long time. The back four of Hayes, O’Sullivan, Delaney and Tobin were magnificent against a front three of real class.

“Chris O’Sullivan, Kieran O’Brien and Iestyn Evans hassled, harried and went toe to toe in midfield, and Lee Hudgell and Jonny Horgan probed and tested the Penydarren back five for the 120 minutes.

“A cruel way to bow out, but the boys will bounce back stronger after such an epic tie. Best wishes to Penydarren – don’t be surprised to see them lift this trophy at the end of the year.”
