Division Two West:

Carmarthen Athletic 23-26 St Clears

There was a fantastic fightback from St Clears as they recovered from being 23-0 down at the break in Carmarthen Athletic to notch a remarkable bonus point victory.

The pitch was only passed fit minutes before kick off, and Athletic elected to play with the slope. It paid dividends early on as home No 9 Scott Maynard linked well with his backs, helping create a corner try for winger Josh Watson which Maynard himself converted.

The scrum half landed two penalties to make it 13-0, and a further blow to St Clears was the loss of full back Adam Phillips to injury.

St Clears hooker Dafydd Page was also yellow carded, and the Athletic pack took full advantage to force a penalty try, and after Maynard kicked a third penalty before the break, the contest appeared all over at 23-0.

But as the rain eased in the second half, Mike Jones’ team got in the ascendancy up front, and with 20 minutes left grabbed a penalty try of their own after the Athletic front five collapsed a scrum.

And after the home side were reduced to 14 men following a yellow card, the away forwards struck again as another drive from the scrum was illegally halted, and another penalty try, the third of the game, made it 23-14.

Five minutes later and St Clears No 8 Matthew Owens bulldozed his way over to reduce the arrears to four points.

It took another 15 minutes of Athletic trying to repel pressure from the away side, and with virtually the last play, Jones’ men worked a final scrum chance.

And yet again, the forwards were impeded as they trucked towards the line, and yet again the referee ad little hesitation in awarding a penalty try and seven points, sealing a tremendous St Clears fightback.

Afterwards, a delighted Jones told Telegraph Sport his pack had delivered a 'scrummaging masterclass'.
