WRU Division One:

Haverfordwest Ladies 17-19 Senghenydd Sirens

HAVERFORDWEST’S title hopes were dealt another big blow on Sunday as they succumbed to a second successive league defeat.

Visitors Senghenydd were keen to avenge a narrow defeat the last time the two sides met, and that they did just that against a below par home side.

The Sirens opened the scoring when centre Sarah Harper showed searing pace to score down the blindside, before a depleted Haverfordwest side responded with tries from centres Stephanie Harris and Elin Hopkins, with Holly Couzens adding a conversion.

But another clinical finish from Harper, who also converted, made it 12-12 at the break with all to play for in the second half.

Haverfordwest made some changes up front after the break but Senghenydd, who had only travelled with 14, players showed their grit to take the lead again as Kaitlin Protheroe drove over, and Harper converted.

But Harris, who shone in what was otherwise a poor team performance, then dived over in the corner for the home team - but Couzens was unable to land the difficult conversion from out wide.

The Lady Blues were dominant in the dying minutes, but could not convert possession into points as the away side defended bravely to hold out for a deserved win.

Positives for Haverfordwest came in the form of second row Lucy French, still in her first competitive season of rugby, and she was named their player of the match for her powerful running.

Haverfordwest will now look to bounce back to winning way when they travel to play Abergele on Sunday.
