Emirates FA Cup quarter final:

Swansea City 0–3 Tottenham Hotspur

Swansea City's wait for a first FA Cup semi final since 1964 goes on after Carlos Carvalhal's side were outclassed by Tottenham Hotspur at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.

First half goals from Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela put the visitors firmly in control - and they continued their dominance after the break as the brilliant Eriksen struck a second, extending Tottenham's unbeaten run against their hosts to 16 games.

Swansea boss Carvalhal made five changes to the side which drew 0-0 at Huddersfield last Saturday, and it was two of the new starters, Tammy Abraham and Nathan Dyer, who almost combined to put the home side ahead inside two minutes.

It was lone striker Abraham who sharply turned Davinson Sanchez before threading a through ball to the winger, but former Swansea keeper Michel Vorm was sharply off his line to cut out the danger.

But that was as good as it got for the Swans in the first 45 minutes, as Mauricio Pochettino’s men proceeded to dominate possession - and it was the classy Eriksen who put them ahead 11 minutes in.

As Spurs countered from deep, the Dane was given too much room as he drove towards the Swansea area, before curling a superb left foot shot from 20 yards out then beat the diving Kristoffer Nordfeldt.

It left the home side complaining of what they saw as a foul on Martin Olsson at the other end of the field moments earlier, but despite manager Carlos Carvalhal signalling for a VAR, referee Kevin Friend was unmoved.

And for the remainder of the half it was Spurs who dominated, as Eric Dier’s lay off to Lucas Moura saw the winger jink past Alfie Mawson in the area before putting his low shot to close to Nordfeldt.

The same player threatened again from Son Heung-Min’s through ball but after making a hash of his initial effort to cut out to pass, a sliding Mawson recovered to thwart the Frenchman.

Son’s movement was causing Mawson and co constant problems and the South Korean fired high into the net after latching onto Eriksen’s chipped pass, but the flag was up and despite Friend this time calling for a VAR review, the marginal decision stood.

The pattern continued and Eriksen came so close to a second when he picked up Lamela’s pass and unleashed another fierce left foot shot from 25 yards that Nordfeldt did brilliantly to tip onto the bar. From the resultant corner, the playmaker’s whipped delivery found the head of Dier, but he could only head over.

Lamela also forced Nordfedlt into a near post save, before the Argentine underlined his side’s dominance in first half injury time.

Kyle Naughton coughed up possession to Moussa Sissoko, and he promptly played in the winger who burst away from Tom Caroll before placing a shot past the static Nordfeldt from the edge of the area.

It was no less than Tottenham deserved – with Carvalhal’s response to throw on Luciano Narsingh for Naughton at half time.

And within seconds of the restart his side should have pulled one back as Olsson’s fierce left foot volley was parried by Vorm into the path of Abraham, who contrived to put his follow up header straight at the Dutch keeper.

Straight after however, it was Nordfeldt who was called into action again, the Swede pushing Dier’s curling 30 yard effort inches over the bar.

The lively Moura also continued to cause the home side problems and had calls for a penalty turned away after being dragged down by Mike van der Hoorn - and Swansea captain for the day Kyle Bartley was forced into a last ditch tackle to deny Son.

But 62 minutes in - it was all over and fittingly, it was Eriksen who got Tottenham's third, proving clinical again from Moura's lay off as he drove a low shot through crowded penalty area and into the bottom corner.

In truth, there was little by means of a Swansea response, and although Son wastefully shot across goal from close range, the final quarter petered out as Pochettino's men pressed without ever having to hit top gear.

It means no Wembley date for the Swans in April, and Carvalhal and co will now turn their attention solely to Premier League survival, and their next game against Manchester United at Old Trafford on March 31st.
