WWFA Tony Nakonecznyj Insurance Brokers Intermediate Cup Semi Final:

Goodwick United 4-0 Carew

GOODWICK United will grace the Liberty Stadium for the second time in three years after goals from Matty Delaney (2), brother Scott, and skipper Adam Raymond saw them easily overcome Carew in tonight's West Wales Cup semi final at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

It was Matty whose two crisp finishes put his side in control after just six minutes, before older sibling Scott struck before the break from close range.

Captain Raymond sealed the win with a six yard strike of his own midway through the second half - as Goodwick kept their hopes of a Division One and West Wales Cup double alive.

And yet it could have been so different had The Rooks taken a golden chance just seconds after the kick off, as Sam Christopher went clean through on goal, and with the outside of his right foot dinked a shot past Goodwick keeper James Gwilt, but also inches wide of the far post.

It proved critical as less than two minutes later The Phoenix Lads led, as a long throw from Stefan Hayes was only cleared as far as Matty Delaney on the edge of the area - and he superbly controlled his volley to fire past a diving Tom Davies.

And in a frantic start, it was the same player who struck again to make it 2-0 after six minutes, as right back Hayes surged forward and his low ball in found Jordan Griffiths, whose first time lay off was side footed home by the young midfielder.

The intensity continued as referee Daniel Beckett tried to keep control of a volatile opening quarter, and Goodwick came close to a third when Horgan and Matty Delaney combined to set up Lee Hudgell, who curled wide from the edge of the area.

The Rooks did get a foothold and striker Scott Ferney prompted a swift counter attack when he intercepted Chris O'Sullivan's short corner, and then found himself picking up Alex Bayley's pass at the other end of the field and cutting into the area - only to be denied by a super sliding tackle from Hayes.

Bayley also shot tamely at Gwilt from long range, but then on the half hour mark, it was Scott Delaney who effectively ended the contest.

Firstly it was O'Sullivan who caught the Carew defence sleeping, sending a quick free kick over the top and finding Jonny Horgan, whose powerful left foot shot was beaten away by Davies.

But from the resultant corner, it was the Delaney brothers who combined to effectively end the contest, as Matty's corner found Scott and although his header was cleared, a scramble ensued and Hudgell set up the centre back to volley home from six yards.

He also went close to a second, nodding over trying to turn in O'Sullivan's mis-hit volley, before midfielders Raymond and Iwan Izzard were lucky to escape punishment after clashing off the ball.

To Carew's credit, they did briefly rally after the break, and Ferney fired over from the edge of the area - and then a goalmouth scramble saw Bayley brilliantly denied from close range by Gwilt, who got back to his feet to gather Jack Christopher's low follow up shot.

But on 66 minutes, it was skipper Raymond who made it 4-0 to his side.

The goal came from another Hayes throw in that was flicked on by player manager Wayne O'Sullivan, and after Griffiths' header was blocked by Davies, it was Raymond who stabbed home.

The goal appeared to deflate The Rooks, and from then on the 2016 cup winners dominated, with Raymond cutting into the box before putting his left foot shot the wrong side of the far post.

It was Matty Delaney who then missed a great chance for his hat trick, blazing over from Hudgell's cut back - and Griffiths also shot wide after a neat turn in the area.

But it mattered little as Goodwick eased into a Liberty Stadium final - and will await the outcome of tomorrow's second semi final between Bwlch Rangers and Penlan Club at Stebonheath tomorrow night.

Nick Scourfield's Carew meanwhile can take pride from their cup run - but are now left to contemplate the disappointment of two semi final defeats on the Meadow this season.
