FORMER Pembrokeshire League footballer Bernie Armstrong has just returned from a two-week holiday to Africa with his family.
Telegraph Sport informed readers last month he was embarking on a mission to Kenya, after arriving Amrstrong was taken aback at how poor the local villages’ living standards were.
“It was a real eye opener,” he said.
“The purpose of my trip was to visit my family, but to also to hand over football kit to the kids who have nothing.”
Armstrong is eternally grateful to Steve Batty and both Haverfordwest County and Kenny Davies, owner of Tees R Us, who supplied the football kits. Also to James Gwilt, Landlord of the Jubilee Inn, Letterston, who gave footballs. The Pembrokeshire Referees’ Society also donated a ref’s kit.
“They were delighted to receive the kit, their eyes lit up with joy and I could see they really appreciated it.”
The friendly matches were played with teams from the slum areas of Huruma, Githogoro, Mathare and Deep Sea.
