Narberth born Caryl Jones produced one of the bravest runs of her career to finish eighth in the Woman's Marathon race at the Commonwealth Games.

The 31-year-old clocked 2:43:58 in searing heat on the Gold Coast, with temperatures breaking 30 degrees celsius despite an early Sunday morning start.

She was tenth at the half way (13 mile) stage, but managed to maintain a consistent pace in the latter half of the race to rise a further two places - and her efforts won great praise from pundits and her supporters back home in what remarkably was only her second marathon race.

Fellow Team Wales runner Eleanor Kirk was 15th in 2:57:01, while the overall winner was Namibia's Helalia Johannes in 2:32:40

After the race, Telegraph Sport contacted Jones from Australia, who said: “It was hard - and probably the toughest thing my body had ever been through.

"I enjoyed every step of it though, the support was phenomenal."

Jones, who has lived in Tavernspite all her life, will now return to the family farm and her work as an accountant in Llewelyn Davies in Whitland.
