Last weekend saw the Carmarthen Warriors travel to the popular Frome 7s in Somerset - and they performed well on both a serious and 'social' level.

With their Elite side out to defend their 2017 title, Arwel Davies also took a second squad comprising some new and old faces to contest the ‘Social’ Tournament.

Both sides opened proceedings kicking on adjacent pitches. Warriors Social got off to a flyer disposing of Whitehead Stags and 3 Signals 21-14 and 55-0 respectively. A 26-7 win against the Cardiff Mustangs saw them safely through to the quarter finals.

The Elite side followed a similar path, despite stuttering against the Gogerddan Raiders with two players yellow carded. They still managed to overcome their fellow Welshmen 12-6 with Tom and Matthew Powell scoring the decisive tries.

In the knockout stages both sides were again successful and progressed to their respective finals with ease.

The Elite side were buoyed by the news that their main rivals Ponty Butchers had crashed out in the semi final to an ever-improving Gogerddan Raiders side, losing 40-12.

The Social final proved a rematch much closer than the first game as the Warriors played Whitehead Stags.

With two minutes left the Warriors trailed 21-22, but a try by Andrew Cooke put them ahead and then it was the Ystalyfera livewire Steff Castle who settled the tie with an impressive solo effort from a scrum on halfway, even finding time to pay tribute to his ‘Fera coaches watching from the clubhouse balcony before diving over. The final score was Warriors Social 35-22 Whitehead Stags.

So the tournament closed with the main event - another rematch with Warriors Elite v Gogerddan Raiders in the main final.

The Raiders had been improving with every game as the tournament progressed and the final proved an enthralling affair involving two evenly matched teams.

It was however, the Raiders who took the Cup back to Cardigan with a 19-12 victory.

The Warriors management retired to the traditional Frome RFC beer and cider festival pleased with their efforts on the day.

Gareth Bennett was happy to praise both sides, saying: “It was great to have two teams progress to their respective finals and also blood some new players who made valuable contributions to both

"It was also great seeing some of the ‘older heads’ like Arwel and Dai Ebsworth getting a run-out too!”

New Aberavon signing Jack Morgan is also making a big name for himself in the shortened game with the Warriors.

Next for the Warriors will be the Heart of Wales 7s in July, a tournament which should also hopefully see another appearance for the Ladies team.
