Three Pembrokeshire swimmers have made the cut to compete in this year’s British Summer Championships after hitting times that put them among the top 24 young swimmers in the country.

Rhys Davies, Tomos Webb and Sean Barrett, who all swim for Pembrokeshire County Swimming (PCS), will fly the flag for the county in Sheffield next month (July 24th-29th).

Craig Nelson, head coach at PCS, said: “It is exciting to have three qualifiers from Pembrokeshire for the British Champs. They have all worked hard to get there and we look forward to them doing us proud.”

In addition, Rhys Davies recently competed at the British Para-swimming International meet, which ran from May 31st to June 3rd in Sheffield. This was event five of six in the World Para-swimming Series. The series began at Copenhagen in March and finished in Berlin.

Swimmers from 33 countries competed at the Sheffield meet, including athletes from the USA, Japan, Australia and Brazil.

Rhys competed as a National swimmer as he is still waiting for his IPC (International Para Committee) license in order to compete in the World Para-swimming Series.

The PCS swimmer competed in five main events, notching up three gold medals in the 200m individual medley (IM), 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke. His 100 backstroke time was within the European swimming championships B standard qualification time.

If he had been able to compete in the World series final his time for 100 back would have placed him fourth in the World Series and his 200IM time would have placed him eighth. He came second in 200m freestyle, and third in 100m breaststroke.

Rhys competed in two other heats – finishing 2nd in 100m freestyle and 1st in 400m freestyle. However, there were no finals for these events as they are not races at the European Championships.

Nelson added: “What a weekend Rhys had. Well done.”
